The Department of Chemical Engineering discusses a doctoral thesis on treating oil refinery waste using dual anodic oxidation techniques and heterogeneous nanophotocatalysts.

Written by

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Technology discussed the doctoral thesis tagged:
‎Treatment of petroleum refinery wastewater by using anoxic oxidation and nanophotocatalysts
On Thursday, 7/4/2024. The thesis of student Hisham Muhammad Majeed aimed to remove the chemical oxygen demand (COD) from the liquid oil waste left behind from the Najaf refinery, where the practical aspect included three stages. In the first stage, an electrode was prepared from tin oxide on a copper substrate, which was used in the anodic oxidation process alone, where a COD removal rate of 73% was obtained. In the second stage, the treatment was carried out using photocatalytic technology using a laboratory system consisting of a photoreactor, where
The results showed that the COD removal rate reached 77%. As for the third stage, anodic oxidation and photocatalysis techniques were used in a dual manner in a laboratory system consisting of an electrochemical reactor and a photoreactor, where a clear improvement was observed in the COD removal process by 89%, and at the optimal conditions, which are the current intensity of 10 milliampere/square centimeter and The acid function is 3, the dose of the catalyst is 0.1 g/l, and the time is 150 minutes. A mathematical model was also developed that simulates the photocatalysis process, and the results showed a very high convergence between the practical results and the theoretical calculations of the mathematical model.
The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel Mohamed as Chairman, and Prof. Dr. Zainab Youssef Shanin, Prof. Dr. Mai Ali Muslim, Prof. Dr. Furat Yasser Sharad, and Prof. Alia Khudair Majeed as members, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Khaled Ajami Sukkar and Dr. Ali Hussein Abbar / University of Baghdad / Al-Khwarizmi College of Engineering. The discussion was attended by the thesis coordinator contracted with the Ministry of Oil, the expert Dr. Zaidoun Khalaf Al-Saadi, Assistant Director of the Petroleum Research and Development Center. In addition to the scientific evaluation of the thesis by Prof. Dr. Ramzi Sayhoud Hameed from the University of Technology / Department of Petroleum Engineering and Prof. Dr. Rasha Habib Salman from the University of Baghdad / College of Engineering. Linguistically by Assist. Prof Dr. Farouk Ahmed Mahdi from the University of Technology.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Technology discussed the master's thesis
Integration of Coagulation-Flocculation and Photolysis Processes for the Treatment of ROC
Thursday, 6/27/2024
The student Ahmed Falah Khalaf’s thesis aimed to propose a combined treatment system consisting of two coagulation-flocculation processes with photolysis to treat concentrated water resulting from performing the reverse osmosis process for wastewater from the Samarra Pharmaceutical Factory. The practical results showed the efficiency of the proposed system in reducing the levels of pollution present in this water, represented by turbidity, the total organic content (TOC), and the chemical oxygen demand (Chemical Oxygen Demand, COD) to the permissible limits according to the approved environmental standards. . Therefore, this proposed system can be used to treat other types of industrial water.
The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Zainab Bahaa Muhammad (Chairman), and Membership. Dr. Abbas Abdel Kazem Khalif and Assist. Prof Dr. Haider Abdul Karim Mohsen and Dr. Thamer Jassim Mohammed (member and supervisor), and Dr. Mukhlid Amer Hussein (member and supervisor). In addition to evaluating the message linguistically by Assist. Prof Dr. Farooq Ahmed Mahdi from the University of Technology from the Department of Chemical Engineering and scientifically by Prof. Dr. Shahla Ismail Ibrahim from the University of Baghdad and Prof. Dr. Kazem Matar Shabib from the University of Technology.
